Anabolic Frolic Makes Hardcore Smile With Fifth Happy 2b Hardcore Release -- Album Review

Daniel Galleno

If there is one man responsible for delivering quality happy hardcore music to the U.S., it is Anabolic Frolic. This playful and energetic brand of fast-paced breakbeat music has remained a relatively underground phenomenon ever since it made the journey from the shores of the U.K. and many DJ's in the U.S. have been unable to compete with the selling power of British DJ's. But, Moonshine Music is quick to acknowledge in a recent press release that "a DJ in North America has quietly been outselling them all with barely anything more than an occasional review." This DJ is Anabolic Frolic and one of his most notable contributions to music has been the Happy 2b Hardcore series which will release its fifth album on Moonshine January 23, 2001.

With a deep love for techno, Anabolic Frolic created the Toronto, Ontario-based label Nokturnal Records in order to expose North American fans to European records and he has used his love of music to develop into the premier happy hardcore DJ this side of the Atlantic. With Happy 2b Hardcore Chapter 5 Anabolic Frolic combines fifteen powerful breakbeat techno anthems that define the happy hardcore sound at a posted speed limit of 140 beats per minute.

The session opens with Fabulous Faber's "Music I Like" and this track combines hard-hitting bass beats with techno shifts that leave both your body and your mouth chanting "This is the music I like" as they move to the track's self-proclaimed "funky beats." DJ Kaos & Ethos make an appearance with "Blue Moon" which exemplifies the ability of happy hardcore tracks to separate vocals and beats into two unique musical ingredients. The enchanting female vocals drive the middle of the song, while the intro and conclusion remain unmistakably happy and hardcore because of the genres all-important instrumental sound.

Anabolic Frolic includes two of his own creations on the album with the Cru L T collaboration "Feels So Right" and "Shelter Me," which features Devastate. These previously unreleased tracks prove why he is this continent's king of happy hardcore because they exhibit the energy of hardcore through the contemplative and experimental filters. They are at once dance-inducing bass tracks and well-designed musical compilations. Other notable tracks include Bang!'s "Sail Away," Midas' "Take It From The Groove," Robbie Long & Coyote's "2000 Style" and Euphony's "Space Invader." However, the success of this series and Chapter Five is Anabolic Frolic's ability to combine every song into a diverse tribute to happy hardcore and its devoted followers. Happy 2b Hardcore Chapter 5 is like having a piece of Hullabaloo at your disposal.
